I love this photo (taken in Hawaii) of me and my wife Debby. It captures the love of nature and outdoors that we have shared throughout our journey together building the Kent Greenhouse from a small vegetable and flower stand by the railroad station in Kent some 40 years ago. When it comes to design, I want the finished product to express the same feeling I get when I am in the deep woods, walking a meadow, hiking a farm trail, or looking out over a spectacular mountain vista. I grew up on a farm, and have spent my entire life walking the land, primarily in New England and New York, but also in Oregon where my beekeeper son, Ethan lives, as well as in many places throughout the world that Debby and I have traveled in the off-season. When I approach a design for a property — large or small — I start with getting the right “sense of place” — I start by looking at what is right under our feet, what is surrounding us in every direction, what is over our heads, what has been done already that is successful, and what are the untapped potentials? I think this is a dying art — because young people spend so much time indoors, or in planned environments — even in landscape architecture courses, more emphasis is on technology and urban planning than on horticulture and natural processes — and almost no time at all is reserved for exploring outside in environments both domesticated and wild. Don’t get me wrong. I love structure in landscape design. I love the way stone and woodwork create strong formal features around which trees, and shrubs and plants can add their special beauty to the way people design construction. I prefer to use natural fieldstone and granite, and hand-hewn hardwoods whenever I can to help bring in some of the untamed world into the formal design.

My inspiration for gardening & getting my fingers in the soil began early, growing up in Ridgefield, Ct. My mom & dad always encouraged me to “help” with our vegetable garden, flower beds and borders. I always being outdoors, and loved venturing into the woodlands to discover nature’s many secrets. The New England landscape is very inspiring to a designer, because it is so rich and varied, and changing all the time. I like to share my own love and knowledge of trees and shrubs with my clients. I the process of planning and building your project to be understandable and enjoyable for you by providing you with the information on site analysis, construction details, plant culture & design possibilities — every site is unique in many ways, so it should be fun to explore all the possibilities of your property.
